BEACH MEETING: where we conspired
Once FIB ended, it was time for TT to actually be a Think Tank. After
our leisurely brunch, Ken would round us up for a meeting. The first day
we had a meeting at the beach in Benicassim. Just finding a way to cram
us all into the few remaining cars took an hour and a half. Then came the
half-hour drive to Benicassim, time spent searching for parking spaces, getting
lost and ultimately meeting up again on the beach.

Of course, we all stopped
at the beach bar before finding a place to park our towels and indulging in a
pre-meeting swim. So it was nearly dusk by the time the meeting finally
began.
For a group our size (there were probably 15 of us left by then) it was
difficult to hear one another over the waves. By poking a hole in the bottom
of a Coca Cola cup I devised a low-tech megaphone which Seba used
briefly. Ufortunately, we laughed so loud at how ridiculous it looked that it defeated
the purpose.
Aside from the meetings, we had one more responsibility before our stay in Vila
Real ended - Vicente had advertised that we would be putting on a show for the
town that Friday evening. Little did we realize that we had a double billing with a
band called "Sexplosion." Do you supppose the monks were rolling in their graves
at the idea of "Sexplosion at the hermitage?"

Shortly after I took this shot, a wave swept through this tableau, causing us to move camp.

As folks prepped for our part of the entertainment, one of the band members popped
into the media lab. He said he was interested in collaborating with us, but after some
messy translation it became apparent that the band wanted us to videotape them,
something we weren't really set up for. We ran into the same fellow up at El Termet
and he asked us if we had any beer to drink afterwards.
When our turn came (around 2 a.m.) Sexplosion graciously let us use their sound
system. It was a funny set-up, actually. Our stage was within the perimeter of a ring
of trees cordoned off with police tape, like some sort of crime scene.

There wasn't
enough equipment to go around, so Jef and I joined the audience as 80/81, Fakeshop
and Elout projected video and animations onto the wall of the chapel. Seba had invited
me to reprise the 'Appiccicoso' song, but it just didn't fit the ambience that
evening. Elout projected some of his work onto a tree and I thought it looked really
magical flitting through the branches. It was quite 3-D, or should I say, 'tree-d'?
